Alto Beni Cacao grew out of a partnership between Alex Whitmore, of Taza Chocolate, and Bolivian brothers Jorge and Nelson Valverde. It was formed as a way to help develop cacao farming in the La Paz region of Bolivia as a viable economic export. Today Alto Beni is has developed into a network of 500 small holder farmers who are paid premium prices and along with the fermentation facility have a long-term commitment to the community.
